NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Few in the world have mastered the game of checkers the way a southern Indiana teenager has.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Holmes a Sellersburg resident captured the 2013 World Checker Draughts Federation youth world championship last month in Barbados.

The Silver Creek High School freshman is ranked 37th in the world.

Holmes bested a field of 11 in the youth championship and qualified to compete in the masters division, which is reserved for the top checker players in the world regardless of age.

His father, Michael Holmes, also is among the top-rated checker players in the world and had Alex playing the game by the time he was 4.

Alex said he studied his father's strategy and adopted some of it into his own game.
